Pedagogical innovation strategies and emerging technologies in high school: transformations in teaching-learning processes for the development of 21st century skills

Abstract

This article focuses on the impact of pedagogical innovation and the integration of new technologies in secondary education to determine how these changes affect the development of 21st-century skills, namely the ability to solve complex problems and the capacity for systemic thinking. A mixed explanatory-sequential methodology was applied, beginning with a preliminary diagnosis of traditional teaching practices, followed by the implementation of pedagogical interventions based on active methodologies such as Project-Based Learning, Cooperative Learning, and Gamification, as well as the incorporation of new technologies, including educational artificial intelligence, interactive digital resources, and immersive environments. The interventions were implemented across multiple curricular areas in secondary education, enabling the evaluation of changes in both teaching processes and student outcomes. The results indicate significant improvements in autonomy, critical thinking, creativity, and students’ ability to solve complex problems through integrated and situated approaches. Systemic changes in classroom dynamics were also observed, characterized by increased participation, active learning, and individualized learning supported by adaptive platforms. Emerging technologies proved to be key mediators in diversifying teaching strategies and enhancing cognitive and socio-emotional skills. The study concludes that pedagogical innovation, together with advanced technologies, must be integral to the processes that reconfigure secondary education and foster flexible, inclusive, complex, and systems-oriented learning that responds to the needs of the contemporary world.
